Spring is coming!

Posted on March 5, 2013 by SDG

Keep your eyes peeled; blubs are about to start popping up from the ground!

Some of the first flowers you will start to see are:

Snow Drop (Galanthus sp.)

Snow-Drop2

These small white flowers come up through snow patches! The flower will droop down right before opening and display three outer petals over three inner petals.

Crocus (Crocus sp.)

Coming in almost every color, Crocuses brighten up your garden in natural masses.  They are a cup-shaped flower and open fully only on sunny days.

Daffodil (Narcissus sp.)

Daffodils will flower for six weeks to six months.  They multiply with bulb division and from seed so each year more flowers will bloom.  Most Daffodils are yellow, orange, white, red or a combination.

Hyacinth (Hyacinth sp.)

Extremely aromatic, Hyacinth are prized for their lovely aroma.  Their thick stalks sport dense trusses of bell shaped flowers in rich colors.

Tulip (Tulipa sp.)

Tulip

This flower comes in many shapes and colors depending on the variety.  They are normally cup or star shaped but can be showy with fringes and different petal shape and arrangement.  Variegated Tulips are produced from the Tulip Breaking Virus creating mosaics in multicolored patterns.

The optimal time to plant in the Boston area (USDA Zone 5b) is October and November.  Most spring bulbs require full sun to partial shade.

Sudbury Design Group will be happy to make sure you have color in your garden throughout the year!
